    The talks will be followed by an Edutech debate. Hajera and Emily will join:

    Paul Sharrad: Paul is on the 'front lines' of teaching computer science in secondary education. He bought in the BTEC at his school (more vocational computing rather than applied computer science). At the same time he is the lead developer on a Linux distro orientated for schools (both server room and classroom). The school uses Linux based pcs for about a decade now.

    Lucy Bloomfield: Lucy is a designer/developer hailing from Australia but on a mission to see the entire world. She believes the education system is falling behind in what needs to be taught to students to produce innovative and creative-thinking people that excel in work environments.

    The panel (with audience participation!) will be exploring issues such as:

    • What impact tech is having on the way in which students learn?
    • How are teachers responding to these pressures?
    • How can tech be better exploited?
    • Are we equipping students for the workplace?
    • Is peer-learning a viable option?

    Early reading expert Emily is Founder of Reading Fairy. She will be delivering a talk focusing on the iTot generation, and the impact of the tablet on children’s reading.

  • Hajera Memon

    Hajera is Founder of Shade 7, a global, multilingual publisher. In her talk, she explains how she used crowdfunding platform Indiegogo to generate funds to support the publication of world's first Koran story book with pop ups.

  • David Walker

    Getting your web presence mobile ready is a must for anyone involved with web development. Juggling the HTML5, CSS and Javascript to get there can be a challenge in a technological landscape where traditional designer and developer roles are changing. In his talk, David explores open source ZURB Foundation - a rapid prototyping and industrial scalable CSS framework that makes responsive design a simpler affair.

  • Mark Parry

    In 2011, inspired by other charitable ventures into the world of apps, homeless charity Porchlight decided to build a smartphone game to raise awareness of the physical and emotional issues faced by rough sleepers. They knew why they wanted an app and they knew what thay wanted it to achieve, but they didn’t know how it would look or how they would do it... with absolutely no budget. Almost three years later, in April 2014, the ‘Don’t Just Walk Past’ game went live in the App store. In his talk, Mark shares his journey on how they did it, and the wider impact 'gamification' has on charities.

    Chris Roberts has been a contributing developer for OpenOB - utilising Opus for Broadcast Audio Links - since 2013. The performance of Audio over IP is defined by the codecs used to encode and decode audio at either end of the link. Indeed, there are no shortage of codecs out there, but no single one fulfils the quality and latency requirements of broadcasters. In his talk, Chris will explain why Opus might change all that...

  • Fran Haselden and Becky Bull

    As part of their final year project at the University of Kent, Fran Haselden and Becky Bull created an integrated multimedia experience: With support from BBC Research & Development they have developed a prototype of a companion app to work alongside the BBC Commonwealth Games 2014 coverage, which will also used as the benchmark for future dual screen projects. Dawing on their experience, they will not only share their journey so far, but also insights into the emerging trend of 'dual screening'.
