With DrupalCon Chicago drawing to a close, attention is turning to London for the European leg of Drupal's two annual conferences, which will be held at the Fairfield Halls from 23rd to 25th August 2011.

Back in October, I carried out some in-depth research into using video in email. Already knowing that Flash video isn't possible, I was interested to see how well HTML5 video works, and the results were very exciting, although not a miracle solution.

The team over at .net magazine asked me to write an opinion piece on the subject, which has now been published in this month's .net (issue 212). Thank you for recognising it as a worthy subject!

With your customers and prospects that is. Tim Deeson looks at how social media can build on links with existing customers and how it can establish a rapport with people who don't yet know you or your organisation. The key is linking your media together to form a strong online relationship, wherever they are on the internet.

Got a mobile strategy? We have been busy developing our own mobile communications – see our new dedicated mobile site at http://m.deeson.co.uk where we look at the benefits and relevancy of mobile marketing to different types of organisation.

The term 'mobile' is actually a bit too broad to be useful and leads to a lot of confusion. It can simply mean access from a mobile phone to a standard website, dedicated mobile applications (for example iPhone apps), SMS communications with customers or customers buying from mobile-specific websites.

With the landscape of the internet changing constantly, it can often feel like the sand shifts just as you get your feet onto something solid. Any marketing professional worth their salt will already be using email as a cornerstone of their campaigns, but they may not be fully aware of just how powerful email can be when combined with social networking.

Drupal is an open source content management system (CMS) which can be extended to provide e-commerce facilities with a module called UberCart. There are a couple of areas in which it is particularly powerful:

Selling access to content or digital products
In this situation all the benefits of Drupal's content management, search, rating and user experience features are available and transactions can be seamlessly processed with a basket.

Basecamp is an online project management tool from 37signals. We use it extensively for all of our design and development projects. It is no exaggeration to say that without Basecamp, my job as a project manager would be considerably more stressful and our projects would run far less efficiently.

An interesting week. Several new sites have been launched, some we can talk about and will write up later, but some we can't, including an Australian pop star's...

Deeson.co.uk has just been featured on Acquia's "Beautiful Drupal" design showcase, which is a compliment. I think Acquia are demonstrating the point with design.acquia.com that just because Drupal can be ugly in the wrong hands, it doesn't have to be.

Bygone Kent is the only local history magazine for the county. Produced by Deeson Create, Publish and Words, we have just got in on the game and put together a brand new website for it! Features include back-issue ordering, subscriptions, local news and online articles. In fact, we used quite an interesting jQuery plugin called Columnizer for the articles pages.

Welcome to the final installment of our three-part blog on conducting a usability study. To recap (aka copy and paste) in the first part, we explained what this is all about, our intentions, process and what we hope to achieve. In the second part, we conducted the usability test, observing the users on the website while they perform the tasks that we have set them in our scenario.

Welcome to part two of our three-part blog on conducting a usability study on one of our Drupal sites. In the first part, we explained what this is all about, our intentions, process and what we hope to achieve.

In this part, we conduct the usability test, observing the users on the website while they perform the tasks that we have set them in our scenario.

Deeson have just completed the rebrand and website for Form Ltd, specialists in fit-out and build services. Form recently did a cracking job of refitting Deeson's new home in Canterbury, so we were delighted when they asked us if we would revamp their corporate identity in conjunction with their new website.

Matt Ridley, author of The Rational Optimist, is featured today on the Guardian website, talking about why he believes "life on earth is bound to get better". Deeson Online created rationaloptimist.com, a Drupal site for the interesting, and potentially controversial book.

It's already caused some debate in the office!

Most people will be familiar with the term “usability”, and instinctively know what it relates to, especially with regards to websites. As web designers, one of our primary goals is to ensure that what we create is usable, but how do we actually know when we get it right?

The only real way of knowing is by observing the people who actually use the thing. Unfortunately, if there is something wrong, quite often your users don’t bother letting you know what isn’t working for them; they just leave your site frustrated.
